A VACANT STARE FACED THE GREAT WINDOW    _{by the top of the staircase.   at that time of the year, the world was painted in cyan & cerulean.   severus snape’s figure, fully clad in black, configured an interesting contrast with the idyllic scenario of the outside world   —-   a world he hadn’t stepped into for a very long time.   ever since that fateful evening at the astronomy tower, that office had been his own particular cosmos ;   he’d become a puppeteer whose strings were tied into a tight knot, power without control   —-   all he could do was try to minimize the damage.} 

_{the three words take a while to settle in.  they first sound foreign, then empty.  he felt nothing, it’d been like that for weeks   —-   that numbness.   snape was many things ;   too much of what was whispered around the corners of the school about him was true & he knew so.   but he was not crafted for murder.   little could be done to mend his soul.} 

                             _{‘ is there anything you need, draco ? ’   words left a pair of dry, thin lips softly, but carrying the weight of many poorly slept nights.  rather than inquiring about the malfoy heir well-being, the question was an attempt to get to the bottom of his statement.   was that draco’s own twisted way of thanking his professor for taking away the burden of that life from his young shoulders ?   severus did not want or need that kind of gratitude from him.}

UNFORTUNATELY,    severus thinks to himself as his stomach sinks a little.  hope is a sentiment he is not very used to nurturing, but in that particular case, there’s still a small flame burning within his being & any reminder that it doesn’t have a reason to remain lit feels like a sharp stab between his ribs.
